Meeting at Jennifer & Brent Augustus' Garden

Talk about eye candy! What a splendid garden! Congratulations to Brent and Jennifer Augustus on this delightful creation.  Every plant and accent piece so carefully considered and placed, not just with such style but also with an evident wide and deep knowledge of the requirements of their chosen specimens.

The beauty of this garden has long been talked about and we can all see why.  Judging from the turnout of the club membership I’m sure the chatter is continuing.

It was wonderful to see such great numbers and to share the joy of this beautiful space in each other’s company. Thank you all for coming.

The club has been very active over the last month with the revamping of the Saint Ann’s roundabout and a tree planting ceremony in the savannah, where 60 trees will be planted in a joint venture between First Citizen’s bank (chief participant), your club and the horticultural division of our government. All in celebration of the 60th anniversary of independence of our homeland. We can be very proud!  The more of us that can help with these ventures, the more can be achieved. As our president said in her address, we owe a great big thank you to Simone Taylor and Katie Bennett for the dedication and hard work over the years. We  are not for one minute letting them off the hook but we need to have on hand more help for them, when they need it. With the knowledge and experience of these ladies, this could only be a marvelous symbiosis for anyone.

The committee would like to thank Mr. Jerome Harrilal of The Exotic Garden TT for stepping up to give us his talk on Bonsai so quickly, when our booked speaker was sadly affected by Covid.  It was a lovely presentation and please keep him in mind when buying gifts for family and friends.

The show bench this month was aglaonemas and dieffenbachias and we got to see some beauties! Thank you Tonya D’Almada for you help with the show bench. It was much needed and much appreciated. Thank you to Chancy Moll, Katie Bennett and Jacinta Sohan for judging the offerings and to Chancy for the knowledge imparted about these plants once the winning entries were announced. A great big congratulations goes to Jennifer Augustus and to Denise Hackett on winning  all the prizes. Well done!

Thank you to Jennifer Augustus for the very educational tour of her garden. It’s great to hear of the challenges we can face and how they are overcome to produce such breathtaking beauty. Thank you too to Wendy Aqui for so convincingly peddling the raffle tickets for the lovely prize.

It was also great to see so many persons showing interest in the photo quiz. The digital presentation of the quiz is forthcoming. This is, hands down, the best way to learn about plants. Read about it, try a plant and you will remember it. That’s how it works.

Refreshments too were wonderful and visits to the table were very popular with many commenting on how tasty the items were. Well done.  Tidying up was a breeze as many hands made light work. Thank you all that were involved.

Meeting at Lyn Murray's Garden

The Club had the lofty pleasure of having the October meeting at the home of everyone’s head girl, Lyn Murray. And what a wonderful meeting it was!

The sky was grey but everything else was so cheerful and bright. Lyn has done a SUPERB job of updating her patch of paradise. The combinations of colours, textures and leaf sizes, along with wonderful flowering specimens, was a treat for all.

Lyn, you have successfully filled your house with art and just as successfully created a masterpiece in your garden. Congratulations my dear friend.

The meeting was very lively and this was in no small part due to our guest speaker, Aaron Barcant. He was so passionate and enthusiastic about his expertise that we were all riveted. We were educated on microorganisms and their role in the soil. It was hard to stop asking questions and most if not all of us were fully drawn in. Congratulations to him on an EXCELLENT talk. We look forward to seeing more of him.

The photo quiz may have taken a bit of a back seat at this meeting but soon the electronic version will be up for all to enjoy.

This was our last regular meeting for the year. We have our annual plant sale to look forward to in November and our Christmas Lunch in December. This year the plant sale would be at Boy Scouts Headquarters in St. Ann’s and the lunch would be held at Paprika Bistro in Westmall. Details to be announced soon.
