Meeting at Alison de Montrichard's Garden

I remember July as being an exciting month. The long holidays from school and the anticipation of wonderful times ahead. School days are a distant memory but what a wonderful time was had by us all at the delightful home and garden of our very own Alison de Montrichard.

Alison didn’t wait until inside her property to start landscaping, even her sidewalk was breathtaking! Every inch used, filled with eye-catching specimens. Who would have thought of planting a Bauhinia in a small space, against a wall and with many dramatic spiky dracaenas nearby?  But it works!

Her front garden is dominated by a black olive tree that has branched beautifully, under which, and in which, multiple shade plants are thriving. The back area can be accessed not just through the house but from both sides of it. Narrow walkways completely used with lovely specimens in pots, although a couple have rooted themselves in the ground and will likely need to be controlled.

The piece de resistance is the back area, on the river’s edge. Alison has made the most of her space and her juxtaposition to the river, building the most beautiful and relaxing garden retreat one can hope for. Potted plants, trees, hanging baskets of breadfruit ferns and in-the-ground beauties at every turn. Orchids in flower were a major attraction. A large pot of Begonias drew one’s eye. Interspersed with the plants were multiple “architectural surprises” like giant toads, ornate planters and clay urns. Some pots were turned on their sides solely for the aesthetic.

An inviting swimming pool also was part of this retreat and fitted in beautifully, with effective landscaping around aspects of it, softening its edges and allowing it to blend successfully with its surroundings. This garden was a real inspiration for our members.

The meeting was interrupted by light rain at times but our very own Lorraine spoke to us on “How to judge the show bench plants”. It was very interesting and I’m sure will lead to better presentation of specimens at future meetings. This months show bench was Calatheas. Thanks to all who participated and congratulations to the winners!

The meeting concluded with the sharing of some finger foods and a beverage. Our August  meeting will be at the home of Sandra Solis on August 10th at 10 am.
